Breaking News: Santana Scratched, May Need Surgery (UPDATED)

UPDATE: Buster Olney was wrong. He’s done. He doesn’t need Tommy John – yet – but he’s done for the year with bone chips.
The Mets once previously depressing rotation is now downright manic; Ollie, Pelfrey, Parnell – he’s the THREE – Redding and Figueroa.
Wow..

Oh boy .
Johan Santana has been scratched from tomorrow’s start against The Fish and is to get his elbow scoped tomorrow and may need, gulp, elbow surgery.
Francouer and Pelfrey told the media they’re not overly optimistic about Santana’s weary left elbow and hinted that he might go under the knife.
“I don’t think anyone expects good news,” said Pelfrey.
Francouer added that, “(Santana) can get it looked at now and be two months ahead by Spring Training.”
Oh boy.
Of all the Mets injuries this year, this may be the worst. Met fans better hope Frenchy was talking about Spring Training 2010. Hurt elbows too often end up with a trip to Dr. Andrews.
Tommy John surgery would shelve Santana until at least September 2010, if not Spring Training 2011.
Out of his last six starts, Johan’s had three pretty bad ones – home against the Cards and Giants and at Houston – and has seen his velocity dip off from the mid to the low 90’s.
Santana is due $20 million next season and $93 million combined from 2010-2013. He has a $25 million club option in 2014.
Santana’s the Mets only starter who would shouldn’t be in Quadruple-A and for the sake of Met Fan Sanity, I hope it’s just some bone spurs or arthro.
Of all the things that the Mets have endured this season, “at least we got Johan,” has been a popular point of reference.
Not looking good right now.
